Research suggests that the medication reduces acidity through the inhibition of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI), a type of gastrointestinal acid production. This is thought to be responsible for the increased risk of IBS, which is one of the major contributors to the development of the condition.
The study included 18,882 patients who had IBS and IBS-2, or IBS-3, according to the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). IBS was defined as an excessive amount of stomach acid. The study included patients with IBS-2, IBS-3 or other IBS-2 diagnoses. The group received a single daily dose of 0.9 mg/kg (2.5-4.5 mg) of Nexium once daily.
IBS patients were randomized to receive a single daily dose of 0.9 mg/kg (2.5 mg/kg) of Nexium for up to 12 weeks. Nexium is used to treat frequent heartburn (two or more times per week) and other acid-related stomach conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, and dyspepsia.
Nexium 20 mg tablets are the first version of Nexium available in the U. S., providing a longer duration of action, up to 20 hours.
